PLATINUM PRINT

A photograph made of pure metal — the longest tonal range in the darkroom, and the longest life.

The English chemist William Willis made the first successful platinum print in 1873 and patented the process the same year, but it took him several more years of refinement before it was reliable enough to sell. In 1879 he founded the Platinotype Company, and from 1880 photographers could buy ready-sensitized “platinotype” paper rather than coat their own — one of the first alternative processes offered as a packaged, off-the-shelf product. The Photographic Society of London awarded Willis its Progress Medal in 1881, and a gold medal followed at the 1885 International Inventions Exhibition.

 

Platinum printing became the favored process of photographers who wanted the opposite of what gum bichromate offered: no hand manipulation, no painterly blur, just an unbroken and completely truthful range of tone. Peter Henry Emerson, who argued photography should be judged on faithful observation rather than imitation of painting, championed it for exactly that honesty. Frederick H. Evans built an entire reputation on it, photographing English cathedral interiors in platinum precisely because the process could hold soot-black shadow and sunlit stone in the same print without losing detail in either.

 

That reputation didn’t survive the First World War intact. Platinum’s price rose sharply as the metal was diverted to munitions production between 1914 and 1918, and the process that had defined fine photographic printing for a generation became commercially unworkable almost overnight. Palladium, a chemically similar but far cheaper metal, took its place through most of the twentieth century — so much so that many prints still loosely called “platinum prints” from that era are actually palladium, or a blend of both.

How IT WORKS

1.        Coat paper with a mixture of a light-sensitive iron salt and a dissolved platinum or palladium salt, under dim, non-UV light, and let it dry fully in the dark.

2.        Contact-print it under a same-size photographic negative in strong ultraviolet light — like cyanotype, there is no camera involved at this stage, only direct contact between negative and paper.

3.        The iron salt changes wherever light reaches it, forming a faint, barely visible image; the platinum or palladium itself is not yet affected.

4.        Develop by flooding the exposed paper with a chemical developer. This triggers a reaction that converts the light-changed iron and the precious-metal salt together into pure metal, appearing across the full tonal range almost at once — embedded directly into the paper fibers rather than sitting in a surface coating.

5.        Clear the print through a series of acid baths to remove every trace of iron and unreacted salt, leaving nothing behind but the platinum or palladium itself, then wash and dry.

Character

A matte, chalky-soft surface with no gloss or emulsion sheen, since the image sits inside the paper rather than on top of it. The tonal scale is the longest and most continuous of any process here, with warmer, richer blacks than a silver print — and because paper, humidity, and developer temperature all affect the result, no two printing sessions come out quite alike.

HANDLING

The precious-metal salts themselves are comparatively mild to handle, but the iron sensitizer stains, and the acid clearing baths need standard acid-handling care — gloves and ventilation. It's gentler than wet plate, daguerreotype, or gum bichromate; what makes it demanding is expense rather than danger, since it's by a wide margin the costliest process in this collection.

LEGACY

The First World War all but ended platinum printing as a commercial trade, and palladium carried the process through most of the twentieth century in its place. Today it survives as a specialist, fine-art practice, often printed as a deliberate platinum-palladium blend, and is generally regarded as the single most permanent photographic printing process ever devised — the choice for exhibition and archival prints meant to outlast everything else on this list.
